Gas Technician 1 (G1) License – The Highest Gas Certification in Ontario

When you're inviting a technician into your home to work on your ductless heating and cooling system, you want someone who truly knows what they're doing. The Gas Technician 1 (G1) license is the highest gas certification you can earn in Ontario. At Ductless Certified Heat Pump, our G1-licensed technician brings decades of experience to every job, ensuring your ductless heat pump installation or repair is done safely, correctly, and up to the strictest codes.

So what does a G1 license actually mean? In Ontario, gas technician licenses are regulated by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). There are three levels: G3 (apprentice), G2 (journeyperson), and G1 (the top tier). A G1 technician can work on any gas appliance, any size, any pressure – from a small water heater to a massive industrial boiler. For homeowners, it means the person working on your property has proven their knowledge through hundreds of hours of training, passed rigorous exams, and continues to meet ongoing education requirements. When we say we're a TSSA certified gas contractor, we mean it.

Why does this matter for your ductless heat pump? Even though mini splits run on electricity, many homes have backup gas furnaces or hybrid systems that combine a heat pump with a gas furnace for extreme cold days. Working on those systems requires a G1 license. Also, any time we're running refrigerant lines or electrical connections near gas lines, a G1 technician knows how to navigate those tight spaces safely. Our Gas Technician 1 doesn't just install your heat pump – they look at your entire home's mechanical systems to make sure everything works together efficiently and safely.

You'll often see other contractors claim they're "licensed," but not all licenses are equal. A G2 license is good, but a G1 is the gold standard. It takes years of on-the-job experience to move from G2 to G1. Our ductless HVAC contractor status is backed by this highest-level certification. So whether you need a single zone system for a garage, a multi zone ductless system installation for a whole home, or just repair or maintenance, you can trust that a G1 technician is on the job.

What Homeowners Say About Our G1 Technician

Knew Exactly What He Was Doing

“We have a hybrid system – gas furnace backup with a new heat pump. Our old contractor was a G2 and kept messing up the wiring between the two. The G1 tech from Ductless Certified fixed it in one visit. You can tell the difference experience makes.”

Robert Huang

Walked Us Through Everything

“I had no idea there were different gas licenses. Our technician explained why his G1 mattered and showed us his credentials. That level of transparency made us feel really comfortable.”

Melanie Foster

Worth the Wait for a G1

“Other companies could come sooner, but they only had G2 techs. We waited an extra week for the G1. Glad we did. The installation was perfect and passed inspection with no issues.”

Thomas Bélanger

Why a Gas Technician 1 License Matters for Your Ductless Project

You might wonder, "My heat pump runs on electricity. Why do I need a gas technician?" Good question. In many Ontario homes, especially older ones, your ductless heating and cooling system might be part of a hybrid setup. That means a gas furnace handles the coldest days, and the heat pump manages the rest. A G1 technician understands how to integrate these two systems so they work seamlessly together. They also know how to safely route refrigerant lines and electrical connections in homes with existing gas lines. It's not just about what they're touching – it's about what's nearby.

Also, if you ever decide to fully switch from gas to electric heat pumps, you'll need a G1 technician to safely decommission your gas lines. It's a job that requires top-level certification. So whether you're installing a single room mini split or a complete whole home ductless heat pump, having a G1 on the job gives you peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gas Technician 1 License

A G2 (Gas Technician 2) can work on most residential appliances up to 400,000 BTU. A G1 (Gas Technician 1) can work on any appliance, any size, any pressure. G1 requires additional years of experience and advanced exams.

For a pure electric ductless heat pump, not always. But if you have a hybrid system with gas backup, or if we're working near existing gas lines, a G1 is the safest and often required level. We bring a G1 to every job for this reason.

You can ask to see their TSSA-issued license card. We're happy to show ours. You can also check with the TSSA directly to confirm a contractor's standing.

Not with us. We charge the same competitive rates regardless of which certification level a job requires. You get G1 expertise for no extra cost.
